Prednisolone is a steroid used as an anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressive medication depending on the dosage chosen. Steroids have common side effects including increased thirst, urination, appetite, and panting, which are more commonly seen in dogs. Other less common side effects include but are not limited to increased aggression, weight gain, earlier onset of diabetes, muscle and joint laxity, and steroids may rarely trigger pancreatitis. Side effects are often dose related, so our goal is to use the lowest possible dose that controls disease. If your pet experiences these side effects and they are not manageable, discontinue the medication and call our office.
